Lower Cholesterol Through Diet

by David Bradley

With the recently highlighted concerns that cholesterol-busting drugs known as statins may carry an increased risk of Parkinson's disease, there is all the more reason to look to the food you eat to help you bring down your cholesterol level naturally.

Holistic health website Sixwise provided its readers with an interesting list of ten top cholestorol-cutting foods.

  1. Shiitake Mushrooms - contain eritadenine, a natural product that reduced cholesterol in animal tests
  2. Walnuts - packed with heart-protecting omega-3 fatty acids
  3. Raw soy bean protein - activates the liver to remove low-density lipoprotein (bad) cholesterol
  4. Blueberries - packed with antioxidant pterostilbene, almost as good as resveratrol in red wine
  5. Salmon - don't overdo it (because of mercury risk), but once a week provides great omega-3 fatty acids source
  6. Garlic - old favourite though to raise good HDL cholesterol, lower LDL, and lower blood pressure
  7. Avocado - it's a myth that avocado will send cholesterol levels through the roof, contains oleic acid, which lowers LDL cholesterol
  8. Black beans - all legumes are great cholesterol fighters as well as providing a good source of wind power
  9. Apples - yes, an apple a day might just keep the doctor away, healthy pectin and fibre source
  10. Greens - Grandma was right, you'll be fit and strong if you eat your greens, especially dark leafy greens like Popeye favourite spinach.
