Dear David,

Thanks for mentioning my work on the Periodic Table on your blog.

I would like to comment on something you said about the IUPAC periodic table being definitive. Oddly enough there was a recent article in the IUPAC magazine Chemistry International in which the author, Jeffrey Leigh, a senior IUPAC committee member, emphasized that IUPAC does not support any particular form of the periodic table nor does it take a stance of such questions as whether group 3 should consist of Sc Y La and Ac as opposed to Sc Y Lu Lr. For what it’s worth I support the second of these as explained in my book on the periodic table, The Periodic Table, Its Story and Its Significance, Oxford University Press, NY, 2007.

As far as I know, there’s only one of those PT coffee tables, and it’s in the guy’s office. There are Sciencebase readers who’ve seen it in the flesh though, as it were.

Of course…sometimes I type faster than my brain can write. It didn’t help that the site in question calls itself an “Elementymology”, I guess my internal autocorrect has an insect fixation…it was a mental bug, you see?

Thanks for reporting back on that Tim. I didn’t see any Google ads because I’m running NoScript and AdBlock+ in Firefox, I guess I should’ve checked that out first. But, your tip basically reveals how others might circumvent the ads if they’re hoping to use the Touchspin applet.

The Touchspin interactive PT seems to be portable enough — save the page, and delete everything except the Shockwave (.swf) file. As long as you have a machine on which you can display a shockwave file by double-clicking on it, it works fine on a thumbdrive.

The page itself has various Google-served ads on it, so such usage may not be desirable to the developers, of course.
