@JJ A graph showing what? Cradle to grave carbon emissions per mile driven, perhaps? Something else?

I don't think the equation balances quite so readily, does it? Fields have to be ploughed fuel crops grown, harvested, processed, transported, engines modified, vehicles replaced. All non-neutral carbonwise. Then there are the issues of land being used in this way for fuel rather than food and the runoff from pesticides and fertilisers. Nothing, admittedly, compared to refining oil, but not carbon neutral strictly speaking unless all the energy requirements and pollution can be offset using solar/wind/wave or whatever...

Slightly off topic, but I was once amazed that a group of non-scientific but very intelligent and educated people simply did not understand that running a bus on rape seed oil did not add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere while running the same bus on diesel did. I think I explained it - but I am not sure. It is scary how quickly the subject of climate change gets beyond the man in the streets level of scientific understanding.

I think plug-in electrics are better than hydrogen cars. We should be working towards the former. Creating a new hydrogen infrastructure is just too costly.

@Moises Funnily enough, I wrote about abiotic hydrocarbons back in the early 1990s and again recently http://sciencespot.co.uk/inorganic-oil/ - I personally suspect they don't exist or at least will not be amenable to our using them if they do, but even if they do represent a never-ending supply of fuel, that's not going to resolve the issue of the atmospheric carbon budget is it?

David,

The "fossil fuels" term seems to be loosing terrain. What you think about an abiotic petroleum? http://www.ciw.edu/news/hydrocarbons_deep_earth.

Bests,
Moises
