Fields have to be ploughed fuel crops grown, harvested, processed, transported, engines modified, vehicles replaced. All non-neutral carbonwise. Then there are the issues of land being used in this way for fuel rather than food and the runoff from pesticides and fertilisers. Nothing, admittedly, compared to refining oil, but not carbon neutral strictly speaking unless all the energy requirements and pollution can be offset using solar/wind/wave or whatever... I think I explained it - but I am not sure. It is scary how quickly the subject of climate change gets beyond the man in the streets level of scientific understanding.
