CAS Fight

Posted in Health at 7:54 pm by David Bradley -- Click to comment

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) has got all hot under the collar about the advent of the PubChem initiative from NIH, claiming that it is treading on CAS Registry toes. It’s not so long ago that ACS the CAS’s “parent” organisation was also expressing concerns about Google coming up with its “Scholar” program.

Regardless, it’s interesting that CAS should be complaining about government-funded chemical information being made available for free, given that (according to correspondents on CHMINF-L) CAS itself was set up with a huge tranche of public funding amounting to millions of dollars, via the NSF.
