More computers discarded in the US finding a second life in the developing world than previously believed, according to a new study in Environmental Science & Technology. The findings may ease growing concerns about environmental pollution with toxic metals that can result from dismantling and recycling computer components in developing countries. Study looks at impact on Peru.

Oh, there's nowhere that recycles like India, but I think we're kidding ourselves that it's green if we're thinking they'll use our obsolete e-gadgets without recycling them...

We need to view things holistically if we're going to "save the world"

Hi David,

Ahh interesting. To continue our discussion from Twitter, I wasn't actually thinking about the refurbishing of old PCs in what I was saying, more on the fact that lots of companies are now starting to setup recycling programmes where they can take back old technology and break it back down into its base components (Which I'm then hoping can be used to manufacture newer generational technology).

As more and more new computers are manufactured, I definitely think we need to start a system where old PCs are totally recycled, so that the newer models displace them, and not complement them.

I hope that made sense. :)
