Cheap Science
The oddest thing that struck me about a BBC report today about Britain’s oldest door (Abbey oak door ) was not that the researchers spent three months determining its origin to Anglo-Saxon times (1050AD), not that it turned out to be have been covered, not in human skin of a punished man, but cowhide, and not that this is being reported as headline news at all, but that the cost of the three-month research project was just 3800 pounds (about $8000).
That’s awfully cheap for such an amazing discovery. Or am I just a cynical old fart?
