Cutting down on spam

There are too many filters and blacklists out there and whole ISPs are being blackballed, including it seems one of the ISPs I use, so if you’ve emailed me and not received a reply, please try the feedback form instead, or leave a comment in a post.

Meanwhile, here’s a handy tip to reduce spam. It seems simple enough, but it’s resulted in a halving of the spam I receive to one particularly vulnerable account (used for posting to the Usenet and forums in the past). Simply set your account (via the ISPs settings interface on its website) to reject all mail not directly address to your email address. That way only messages personally addressed to you rather than a distribution list will get through. Obviously, you’ll have to add specific filters if you use the address to subscribe to Listservs and the like and watch out for friends who send cc you in on all their “jokes”, they’ll be blocked too, which in some cases can be a good thing.
