I have to agree with the article metal food packaging really gets into food. I work for a packaging company myself and very frequently we deal with clients who use inappropriate equipment. It can be the reason. I remember that one of our clients bought trays from a different source which were meant to be microwavable. Unfortunately, he got a lot of customer complaints. Because, in fact the trays were not microwave safe.

Another issue is that we are concerned about the environment. It's true, we really should care about it. However, if we take into account the fact that STILL even after using so much packaging, 50% of the world's food goes bad.

Cadmium has been used as a stabiliser in plastics manufacture. In the EU no plastic is allowed to have a cadmium content that exceeds 0.01% by mass of the plastic material. Elsewhere in the world, different rules will likely apply. EU Council Directive 91/338/EEC of 18 June 1991 limits the use of cadmium compounds in PVC products, for instance.

I didn't know cadmium was used in plastics, thought it was just in batteries. Is cadmium included in the REACH regulations for Europe or the toxics in packaging regulations in America?
