Interesting thought Gideon, thanks for the comment. Governments certainly don't like to admit mistakes.

The American war on drugs (prohibition by any other name) has cost US taxpayers vast amounts of money and huge encroachments on their civil liberties; not to mention subjecting many non-US residents to US laws - surely taxation without representation!
Depending on your view of history - all because Nixon wanted a stick to beat the anti-war demonstrators with.
The US government considers realising/correcting its mistakes as a sign of weakness, to be avoided at all costs - which is a shame, really.

Pot definitely works - "A new study in the journal Neurology is being hailed as unassailable proof that marijuana is a valuable medicine. It is a sad commentary on the state of modern medicine that we still need "proof" of something that medicine has known for 5,000 years."

For a broader picture of the history of this plant, and some of the politics behind its criminalization, I suggest these links:

Hemp, the premier renewable resource - http://www.ratical.org/renewables/

and

Fiber Wars: The Extinction of Kentucky Hemp http://www.globalhemp.com/Archives/Essays/Fiber/fiber_wars.html

These deal with the economic reasons the cultivation of hemp was actively suppressed after WWII despite its importance to the war effort and the economy of several US states.

The alleged dangers of marijuana were simply fabricated at that time, out of thin air, to support the elimination of this crop.
