According to news just in, the benefits of recycling risk being undermined by the sheer quantity of waste being generated. Recycling rates have risen but the key to dealing with our escalating waste problem lies in changing our buying habits and our attitudes to consumption, according to the UK's Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Durrrh. Isn't that what I've been saying for years? Waste not, want not.

The ESRC report claims that if household waste continues to rise by 3% per annum, the cost to the economy will be £3.2 billion (about $6.5b) and the amount of harmful methane emissions will double by 2020.

Mina, that was my sentiment exactly. Banning the standby button will not offset the billions of tonnes of carbon emissions from industry, transport, and TV watching. Hsien has it exactly right in her comment, I actually know at least two journalists who don't even own a TV, some of them wear the same clothes all week, although as journalists it is doubtful as to whether they get to bed before the witching hour each night.

I would tend to agree but at the same time, there's this notion that to make any difference, we have to aim for the 'big stuff,' which a lot of people just can't be arsed to do.

Sidenote: This is my first time coming across your blog and I have to say, it's really well written and easy to follow.

People can save so much more energy by:

1. Not having a TV (read instead)
2. Wear their clothes a few more times before washing
3. Forget about computers and the Internet
4. Go to bed when it gets dark
