Papers, as you may already know, have/had subeditors and headline writers to come up with the headlines after the journalist submits their copy. Traditionally, the hack wouldn't write their own headline. Often a sore point when readers complain about headline hype. Ian Sample definitely went for the raspberries in this instance though I reckon. Of course, with the imminent death of national newspaper reporting the day of the standalone headline writer is probably long gone... I wish I were earning enough to employ someone but I don't think I did a half bad job with this one. OK it's not strictly relevant to the science being reported, but it was a nice way to relate the result to everyday life without complete disregard for scientific accuracy. The study of complex molecules in space is a really important part of astronomy research but molecules will never be as "glamorous" as black holes, gamma ray bursts or exoplanets... As for the general practice of using dumbed-down headlines to promote science results, I worked with a press officer at a large research institution for a while and his opinion was that getting the attention of the public justified adding stupid titles to the press releases.
