www-ukb-homeoffice-gov-uk

What, you may ask, has www.ukb.homeoffice.gov.uk to do with Sciencebase? Well, it's not an actual working web address, but it is a keyword that lots of people search for. Moreover, it is a keyword that comes up in Google's new autosearch feature in preference to the correct URL when someone types www. ukb. Now, as I said with www.dvla.co.uk previously, wouldn't you expect said agency to obtain the www.ukb.homeoffice.gov.uk domain and apply a permanent (301) redirect to that URL to point it to the actual UKBA? While they're at it, they should also get www.ukb.homeoffice.co.uk and www.ukb.homeoffice.gov redirect those too, as they also appear ahead of the actual address for UKBA in Google's autosearch system too.

It is very odd that they don't do this, so in deference to Her Majesty's Government, I've created this page to do it for them, in an indirect way, admittedly, but you should be able to click a link here and find the UKBA information you're after.

What they're usually after is www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk, which is the UK government's Border Agency homepage. If you're still wondering why I have this page on Sciencebase, you can blame fellow Brit blogger Patrick Altoft.

Meanwhile, related news just in - New measures aimed at cutting the number of foreign workers coming to the UK from outside the EU are due to be announced, according to the BBC website. The story explains that the types of businesses which can use non-EU workers because of skill or labour shortages will be listed. This means employers whose jobs are not on the list will find it harder in the future to recruit foreign workers.
